Terms of Employment:

10 months/ 183 days per year.  Salary is at the Auxiliary Pay Plan Aux3 on the EISD Compensation Plan.  Entry level rate of pay is $15.77/hour with additional consideration based upon directly related experience. Minimum of 25 hours per week.

 

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school or other designated locations. Maintains safety of students on the bus through enforcement of safety and student standards of conduct. Performs preventive maintenance and safety checks of the bus.  

 

NOTE: Applicant must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the applicant, before continuing within the process towards possible employment.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency), preferred
  • Valid Texas commercial driver’s license CDL (Class B)
  • Valid Texas Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) Endorsements or must obtain within 30 days of employment
  • Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Ability to meet alcohol and controlled substance testing requirements set forth by Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991
  • Ability to pass annual medical examination per Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively including performing basic mathematical skills as related to interpreting map written route procedures and completing reports
  • Ability to obtain School Bus Driver Certification (Texas Department of Public Safety)
  • Ability to manage student behaviors

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Vehicle Operation

  1. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  2. Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  3. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify mechanics of needed repairs.
  4. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
  5. Maintain bus, perform pre-trip inspections (interior/exterior) and keep assigned bus clean and fueled.

Student Management

  1. Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  2. Maintain good rapport with students, parents, guardians, campus administration and co-workers.
  3. Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems to appropriate campus administrator and submit Bus Incident Reports, as required.
  4. Instruct students on bus rules/regulations and procedures to safely board, ride, and depart bus and cross the street.

Safety

  1. Observe and stay abreast of all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  2. Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
  3. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, and body fluid kit.
  4. Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not immediately correctable.
  5. Assist with securing appropriate child safety restraint systems.
  6. Report any conditions that impact route to include hazardous and safety related situations immediately.

Other

  1. Operate communication equipment to communicate with transportation office, campuses or district police.
  2. Available to work AM and PM school routes, field trips and other assignments. Work irregular hours as needed.
  3. Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
  4. Keep records of bus mileage, gas and oil consumption to include number of passengers transported.
  5. Other duties as assigned - in the best interest of the district.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

 

Equipment Used:

School bus, two-way radio, cell phone, computers, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher, wheelchair lift, ramp, and special needs adaptive equipment.

 

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Maintain emotional control under stress. Prolonged driving, sitting, continual reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions. Moderate walking and occasional lifting, heavy, 45 pounds or more. Work outside, inside; exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes. Occasional exposure to biological hazards.
