Primary Purpose:

Plans, organizes, and develops programs and processes for the Child Nutrition Department in accordance with current federal state, local and EISD standards, guidelines and regulations governing EISD facilities to ensure that quality nutritional services are provided on a daily basis.  Engages in community outreach programs and child nutrition education initiatives in support of EISD.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree (required) from a program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), the commissioning arm of the ADA.

 

Registerd Dietitian

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Skilled in planning, organizing and prioritizing

Ability to analyze foods for nutritional value and to learn Nutrikids Menu

Good communication skills both in public speaking and writing

 

Experience:

2-5 years experience within Clinical or Food Service/Menu development

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

  • Develops and manages the nutritional analysis of menus including production records, recipes, and menu costing.
  • Manages the nutritional analysis of menus and ensures that menus are in compliance with all TDA/USDA guidelines.
  • Conducts kitchen inspections to ensure department is compliant with all TDA and USDA procedures.
  • Creates and implements high school culinary and nutrition curriculum programs.
  • Responsible for applying, managing, and communicating grant programs to promote peer to peer learning.
  • Develops and conducts staff training on TDA/USDA guidelines, menu planning system, and quality control procedures.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and supervises dietetic interns from various university dietetic programs.
  • Builds relationships and serves as the Child Nutrition Department representative with other EISD departments as well as community organizations and individuals involved in school nutrition related activities.
  • Counsel individuals on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life.
  • Maintain appropriate records for students with special dietary needs.
  • Provides nutritional value of special diets for students with diabetes, food allergies, and those with other dietary medication requirements.
  • Attends bid meetings and participates in bid evaluation process.
  • Represents the Child Nutrition Department at media/public relations events and conducts media interviews on various topics related to EISD Nutrition Services.
  • Develops written communication on school nutrition issues and EISD nutrition programs including fact sheets, talking points and media releases.
  • Engages with students, educators, parents, and the community in frequent after-school, weekend outreach programs.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work Leadership. Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of two or more employees, but does not have formal supervisory responsibility. Leading and directing is restricted to monitoring work and providing guidance on escalated issues. Most of work time is spent performing many of the same duties they are leading.

 

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

  • Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities.

 

BUDGET AUTHORITY

  • No budget development activity is required.

 

PROBLEM SOLVING

  • Decisions are made with greater freedom and discretion, including recommendations that are subject to approval on matters that may affect multiple departments across EISD. Job is frequently expected to recommend new solutions to problems, to improve existing methods/procedures/services and generate new ideas. May also review decisions made by other individuals on more routine matters.

 

IMPACT OF DECISIONS

  • Decisions have moderate impact to the facility/department or division, causing increased satisfaction or dissatisfaction; producing efficiencies or delays; promoting or inhibiting personal intellectual or professional development; and/or contributing to financial gain or expense. Errors may be serious, usually not subject to direct verification or check, causing losses such as improper cost calculations, overpayment or improper utilization of labor, materials or equipment. Effect usually confined to the organization itself and is short term.

 

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS

  • Collaborate and solve problems – works with others to resolve problems, clarify or interpret complex information/policies, and provide initial screening/negotiations without approval authority. Interactions are typically with customers, senior level professional staff, and managers.

  • Regularly assesses and diffuses complex, and escalated customer issues. Takes personal responsibility and accountability for solving systemic customer service problems. Regularly explores alternative and creative solutions to meeting the needs of the customer within EISD's policies and guidelines.

 

 

 

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Physically transporting, raising items from a lower to a higher position, or moving objects horizontally weighing less than 15 pounds from one location to another. Maintain emotional control under stress.  Frequent district-wide travel and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Extended work hours during evening or on weekends.
