Primary Purpose:

Assist the teacher in the preparation and implementation instructional activities and administrative requirements in a general education inclusive setting

 

Qualifications:

HS Diploma or GED

Forty eight (48) completed semester college hours from an accredited college/university or

Have passed the TABE test.

 

Must possess or be eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board of Educator Certification and must obtain a national criminal background check through the SBEC website within 30 days of hire.

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of working in inclusive settings

General knowledge of the TEKS curriculum

Ability to work well with children who have special needs

Ability to work well as a team with faculty, parents, consultants, adn administrators

Good communication/interpersonal skills

Lifting/Restraint training preferred

Knowledge as to use of various adapted equipment and assistive devices

 

Minimum experience:

Experience working with special needs children (preferred)

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Uphold and enforce school rules, programmatic and administrative regulartions, and state and local board policy
  • Implement lesson plans with little supervision in an inclusive general setting
  • Work with special education teacher in planning and providing individual assistance to students, at times without immediate proximity supervision by the teacher, through utilization of a variety of methods of instruction and learning experiences
  • Assist the special education teacher in preparing instructional materials
  • Assist in the collection of student evaluation data as necessary for the comprehensive assessment of students, tracking student achievement and educational planning
  • Confer with the special educaiton teacher regarding pupil progress and/or problems
  • Assist the special education teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports
  • Assist in maintaining a pleasant learning environment and order within the classroom
  • Participate in inservice training programs addressing competencies necessary for special needs students, as well as in faculty meetings, special events, etc., as required by the Special Education program/campus/district
  • Gain and/or maintain knowledge of various adaptive equipment and assistive devices
  • Maintain complete confidentiality of all individual student information/records
  • Follow student individual educational plans as directed by the special education teacher
  • Follow classroom emergency procedures as established by the special education teacher
  • Assist with lifitn, handling, feeding, changing, toileting and other needs specific to the special population
  • Assist in monitoring Special Education students provided district transportation, including arrival and departure of buses, student behavior on buses, etc.
  • Assist in behavior management, including crisis intervention and restraint procedures, as directed by the special education teacher; and
  • Other special educaiton duties as assigned by the teacher and/or principal

Equipment Used:

Copier, Fax Machine, Laminator, Audiovisual equipment, Computers and printers, Adaptive technology specific to student needs, including auditory trainers, brailers, mobility devices, etc.
